Chapter 3

The Corner Booth

Two weeks after Nolan Hale walked out of his house in Myers Park, Rae Matsuda was having a night.

Not a bad night, exactly. Not a crisis. Just the kind of night where the diner was too quiet and her thoughts were too loud, and the space between the two filled up with a restlessness she couldn't name. It was 1:45 AM on a Tuesday, and the Bluebird was empty. Mateo was in the back, prepping biscuit dough for the morning and listening to a podcast about true crime at a volume that suggested he thought the kitchen walls were thicker than they were. The highway outside was dark, occasional headlights cutting through the blackness and disappearing south.

Rae was standing at the pie case, taking inventory. This was not a task that required her attention — there were four pies, the same four there always were: apple, cherry, pecan, and the coconut cream that Mateo made from his grandmother's recipe and that was, in Rae's opinion, the single best thing in the entire diner, possibly the single best thing in the entire county. But counting pies was something to do with her hands, and doing something with her hands was better than standing still and thinking.

She'd been thinking too much lately. Ever since Jolene's comment about the pause button. Ever since her mother's question about surprises. These observations had lodged in her like splinters — not painful enough to demand immediate attention, but present, constant, felt with every movement.

She'd been thinking about Knoxville. About the campus in October, when the trees along The Hill turned orange and gold and the air smelled like dying leaves and possibility. About Professor Huang's intro to ecology class, where she'd sat in the front row — Rae always sat in the front row, a habit she'd had since kindergarten — and felt, for the first time in her life, that she was in the right place. That the thing she was doing was the thing she was meant to do.

She'd been thinking about a particular afternoon, late in her third semester, when she'd been in the field with a group of students doing a stream survey in the Smokies. They'd been wading in cold water up to their knees, collecting samples, and she'd turned over a rock and found a hellbender — a giant salamander, prehistoric-looking, magnificent — and the feeling that had gone through her was so intense and so pure that she'd laughed out loud, standing in the water with the cold seeping through her boots, and Professor Huang had looked at her and smiled and said, *That's it, Rae. That's the feeling. Hold onto that.*

She hadn't held onto it. She'd let go of it, the way you let go of things when the world demands your attention elsewhere, and now it was five years later and the feeling was a memory and the memory was a splinter and the splinter hurt.

The bell above the door chimed.

Rae looked up. A man was standing in the doorway, and the first thing she noticed — because Rae noticed everything — was that he didn't move like the usual late-night customers. The truckers came in with momentum, propelled by fatigue and routine, already heading for their usual spots before the door closed behind them. The drunks came in with chaos, stumbling and loud, bringing the night in with them. This man came in slowly, almost cautiously, like he was stepping into water and testing the temperature.

He was tall-ish. Not looming, but he carried his height like he wasn't entirely comfortable with it — slightly hunched, hands in the pockets of a jacket that was too nice for this diner but too worn to be new. His hair was dark brown and needed a cut. His face was — interesting. Not handsome in the way that word usually meant, not in a way that jumped out at you, but in a way that you discovered, feature by feature. Sharp jaw. Tired eyes that were an unusual light color she couldn't quite identify in the fluorescent light. A nose with a slight bump in the bridge that kept his face from being too symmetrical. He looked like a man who hadn't been sleeping, and who hadn't been eating enough, and who was carrying something heavy that he'd been carrying for a long time.

He looked, Rae thought, the way she felt.

He glanced around the diner — the empty booths, the counter, the pie case where Rae was standing — and something in his face shifted. Not relaxed, exactly, but... eased. Like the place itself was an answer to a question he'd been asking.

"Hi," Rae said. "Sit anywhere you like."

"Thank you." His voice was quiet. Not shy — there was nothing tentative about it. Just quiet, as if he'd been in a loud place for a long time and had adjusted his volume accordingly.

He chose the corner booth. The one in the back, against the far wall, under the window that faced the side parking lot and beyond it the dark treeline. It was the booth that nobody chose, because it was the farthest from the counter and the kitchen and the warmth that radiated from the center of the diner. It was the booth for people who wanted to be in a room with other people without being *with* them. Rae knew that booth. She understood it.

She gave him a minute to settle — she always did, because nobody wanted a server hovering the instant they sat down, despite what the training manuals said — and then she walked over with a menu and a glass of water.

"Coffee?" she asked.

He looked up at her. His eyes, she saw now, were an amber-gold, warm despite the exhaustion in them, and there was something in the way he looked at her — not flirtatious, not assessing, just *attentive*, as if she were a real person and not just a function, as if the act of bringing him a menu was a thing worth noticing.

"Please," he said. "And —" He glanced at the menu, then at the pie case across the diner. "What kind of pie do you have?"

"Apple, cherry, pecan, and coconut cream. The coconut cream is the best thing we make."

He almost smiled. It was like watching something try to surface — the corners of his mouth lifted, just slightly, and then settled back. But his eyes changed. His eyes got warmer.

"Coconut cream, then. Thank you."

"Coming right up."

She poured his coffee and cut a slice of the coconut cream, a generous slice because — well, because he looked like he needed a generous slice. She set both in front of him and watched him wrap his hands around the mug the same way Jolene always did, like the warmth was the point.

"Thank you," he said again. Then he reached into a bag she hadn't noticed — a worn leather messenger bag, sitting on the seat beside him — and pulled out a book.

And that was it. He sat in the corner booth, and he drank his coffee, and he ate his pie slowly, and he read.

Rae went back to the counter. She wiped things that didn't need wiping. She refilled the sugar caddies. She did all the things she did on quiet nights, the maintenance tasks that kept the diner ticking, and she did not think about the man in the corner booth, except that she did, in the peripheral, half-conscious way that she thought about the flickering light in booth six or the slow leak in her tire — a thing to be aware of, a detail filed away.

He stayed for three hours. In that time, Rae refilled his coffee twice — approaching quietly, pouring without small talk, because she could read people and this man did not want small talk. He didn't want to be engaged. He wanted to be *present* — in the diner, in the booth, in the book — without being required to perform the social rituals that being in a public place usually demanded.

She understood that. She understood it deeply. And so she gave him what he needed, which was the same thing she needed on her best days: the company of strangers without the burden of connection.

At 4:50 AM, he closed his book and stood up. He left a twenty-dollar bill on the table — the pie was $4.50 and the coffee was $2.75 with unlimited refills, which meant his tip was nearly three times the cost of his meal. He caught her eye as he walked toward the door and gave her a nod. Not a wave, not a verbal goodbye, just a nod. A small, quiet acknowledgment: *I was here. You were here. Thank you.*

The bell chimed as he left. Rae watched through the window as he walked to his car — a dark sedan, too far away to see the make — and pulled out of the lot and disappeared south on the interstate.

She cleared the booth. The plate was clean. The coffee cup was empty. The twenty was crisp, like it had come from an ATM. She tucked it into her apron and stood for a moment in the empty booth, and the space still held a trace of him — not a scent, exactly, but a quality of attention, as if the booth remembered what it felt like to be sat in by someone who was paying attention.

She shook her head. She was being ridiculous. She was romanticizing a random late-night customer because she was tired and lonely and Jolene had put ideas in her head.

She went back to work.

He came back the following Tuesday.

Same time — right around 2 AM. Same entrance — slow, careful, testing the water. Same booth. Same order: coconut cream pie and coffee. Same book — no, a different one. Last week had been something with a dark cover she couldn't see clearly. This week it was a paperback, thick, with a cracked spine that suggested it had been read before.

"Good book?" she asked, setting down his coffee. She hadn't planned to say it. It just came out, the way things did at 2 AM when the filters were down.

He looked up. Those amber eyes again, startled by the question, or maybe just startled by being spoken to.

"It's *Walden*," he said. "Third time."

"Is it better the third time?"

That almost-smile again. Closer to the surface this time. "Different. You notice different things."

"I've never read it."

"He goes to live in the woods. Alone. Deliberately."

"Sounds nice."

"It is. It's also insufferable. Thoreau was brilliant but he was also the kind of person who would have been exhausting at a dinner party."

Rae laughed. She didn't mean to — it was surprised out of her, a short, bright sound that felt foreign in her own throat. When was the last time she'd laughed? Not the polite laugh she gave customers, the reflex chuckle at tired jokes. A real laugh. She couldn't remember.

The man's eyes changed when she laughed. They got brighter, or wider, or some shift that she couldn't quite define but that she felt, the way you felt a change in temperature — not seeing it, not hearing it, but knowing it in your skin.

"Sorry," she said. "That was just — I've never heard anyone call Thoreau exhausting at a dinner party before."

"You work the overnight shift at a diner off the interstate. I can't imagine Thoreau comes up a lot."

"You'd be surprised. We get very philosophical after 3 AM."

Now he did smile. A real one. It transformed his face — broke the seriousness of it, opened it up, made the tired eyes young and the sharp jaw soft. It was a good smile. Not dazzling, not practiced. Just good. Honest.

"I'll keep that in mind," he said.

She left him to his book. She went back to the counter, and she realized that her heart was beating slightly faster than normal, which was a physical observation she filed away the same way she filed away the flickering light and the loose salt shakers and the slow leak — a thing to be aware of. A detail.

He left at 4:45. Same twenty on the table. Same nod on the way out.

The third Tuesday, he arrived at 1:50 AM — ten minutes earlier — and Rae caught herself noticing the time, which meant she'd been anticipating him, which meant something she wasn't ready to examine.

She poured his coffee without being asked. She brought the coconut cream without being asked. She set both down and said, "New book?"

He held it up. A collection of essays with a Japanese character on the cover.

"It's about solitude," he said. "The pleasures of being alone."

"You've got a theme going. Walden. Solitude. A diner at 2 AM."

"I suppose I do."

She should have walked away. That was the professional thing to do — deliver the order, check in periodically, don't hover. But the diner was empty, and Mateo's podcast was murmuring through the kitchen walls, and the night was long, and this man was the most interesting thing that had happened in her Tuesdays in as far back as she could remember.

"Can I ask you something?" she said.

"You can ask."

"Why this diner? We're not exactly a destination."

He considered this. She could see him considering it, the way his eyes went somewhere internal, accessing something he might or might not share. Finally he said, "It's real."

"Real?"

"Real. It's not — it doesn't look like a magazine. It doesn't feel designed. The light —" He gestured toward booth six, where the fluorescent was flickering in its usual subtle stutter. "That light has been doing that since the first time I came in."

"Three weeks and counting. My boss won't fix it."

"I like it. It's honest. Things that are broken and still working are honest."

Rae looked at him. Really looked at him, in the way that 2 AM permitted — without hurry, without pretense, with the kind of attention that daylight and professionalism usually prevented. And what she saw was a man who meant what he said, who was not making conversation but making a *statement*, and who was telling her something about himself without telling her anything at all.

"Things that are broken and still working," she repeated. "Is that us or the light?"

The smile again. The good one. "Maybe both."

She left him to his book. She didn't ask his name. He didn't offer it. And this felt right — felt like a contract they'd entered into without discussion, an agreement that whatever happened in this booth at 2 AM on Tuesdays existed outside the usual rules of human interaction. No names. No backstories. No demands. Just coffee and pie and the occasional exchange of words that meant more than they should.

He left at 4:40. Twenty on the table. Nod at the door.

And Rae, standing in the empty booth afterward, pressing the twenty flat between her fingers, thought: *Jolene was wrong. I wasn't waiting for something. I just didn't know what I was waiting for.*

Then she thought: *Shut up, Rae.* And she went back to work.

The fourth Tuesday, it rained.

Not gently. The kind of rain that made the interstate dangerous and kept the smart truckers parked at rest stops and the dumb ones white-knuckling their rigs at forty miles per hour with their hazards on. The kind of rain that turned the Bluebird's parking lot into a shallow lake and drummed on the roof so hard that Mateo's podcast was inaudible and even the hum of the pie case was drowned out.

Rae watched the rain through the front windows and told herself she wasn't wondering if he'd come.

At 2:15, the bell chimed. He came through the door soaked, his jacket dark with water, his hair plastered to his forehead, and he was — for the first time since she'd seen him — laughing.

Not loudly. A quiet, breathless laugh, the laugh of a person who had just done something absurd and knew it was absurd and didn't care. He stood in the doorway dripping onto the mat and he laughed, and Rae, behind the counter, felt something crack in her chest. Not break. Crack. The way the ground cracks in spring when something underneath is pushing up.

"Rough night?" she said.

"My car's wipers stopped working about ten miles back. I drove the last stretch leaning forward like that would help."

"Did it?"

"Not even a little."

She poured his coffee. She brought his pie. She also brought a stack of paper napkins, which she set beside him without comment, and he used them to mop his face and neck and the dripping ends of his hair, and the ordinariness of this — a wet man drying himself with diner napkins — made something warm and unfamiliar bloom in her chest.

"Thank you," he said. He said it every time, but tonight it sounded different. Heavier. As if the thank you encompassed more than the coffee and the pie and the napkins.

"You drove through that just to sit in a diner and read?"

"I drove through that to sit in *this* diner and read. There's a difference."

Rae felt the warmth again. She ignored it. She was very good at ignoring things.

"What's tonight's book?"

He held it up. She recognized the cover this time — a worn copy of something she'd seen on the shelf at the used bookstore but never picked up. A novel.

"Any good?"

"I don't know yet. I'm fifty pages in and I can't tell if the main character is a genius or a disaster."

"In my experience, those aren't mutually exclusive."

He looked at her. The amber eyes, warm and wet from the rain, and the almost-smile that was becoming, incrementally, an actual smile. "Speaking from personal experience?"

"I work the overnight shift at a diner off the interstate. Draw your own conclusions."

Now the smile broke through fully, and she saw his teeth for the first time — slightly crooked on the bottom, a small imperfection that made the rest of his face make sense somehow, that made him look *real* in the way he kept using that word.

"What's your name?" he asked.

It was the first time either of them had crossed the line. Four weeks of silent contract, of no-names and no-backstories, and he'd just stepped over it, and the stepping felt momentous, felt like something, and Rae's heart did that thing again, the slightly-faster-than-normal beating that she'd been filing away and ignoring.

"Rae," she said. "What's yours?"

A pause. So brief she almost missed it. A flicker of something in his eyes — not deception, exactly, but decision. The face of a man choosing what to reveal.

"Nolan," he said.

"Well, Nolan. Your pie is getting cold."

"I don't mind cold pie."

"Nobody minds cold pie. That's the whole point of pie."

He smiled again. She went back to the counter. And the rain drummed on the roof, and the light in booth six flickered, and the night stretched on, and for the first time in as long as she could remember, Rae Matsuda was not counting the hours until her shift ended.

She was hoping they'd last.
